Wheelchairs & Power Chairs: Complete Guide
Independent reviews and guides for manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, transport chairs, and bariatric models. Find the right wheelchair for your needs and budget.
Choosing the Right Wheelchair
A wheelchair is more than a mobility device. It is the foundation of daily independence for millions of people. Whether you need a lightweight transport chair for medical appointments, a manual wheelchair for daily use, or a power chair for full-time mobility, the right choice depends on your specific needs, lifestyle, and physical abilities. The wrong chair can cause discomfort, skin issues, and reduced independence, which is why getting the fit and features right matters so much.
Our guides cover every major wheelchair category with honest reviews, real-world testing insights, and practical buying advice. We focus on the details that actually affect your daily life, not just the specifications on the box.
Manual Wheelchairs
Standard Manual Wheelchairs
Standard manual wheelchairs are the most common and affordable option. They feature a steel or aluminum frame, fixed or swing-away footrests, and large rear wheels that the user (or an attendant) can push. Most models fold for transport and weigh between 30 and 45 pounds. They work well for part-time use, but their weight and limited adjustability make them less ideal for all-day, everyday users.
Lightweight and Ultra-Lightweight Wheelchairs
Lightweight wheelchairs (under 30 pounds) and ultra-lightweight models (under 20 pounds) use aluminum, titanium, or carbon fiber frames to reduce weight without sacrificing strength. This weight savings makes a real difference for self-propelling users, reducing fatigue and strain on the shoulders and arms. Many lightweight chairs also offer more adjustability for seat depth, backrest angle, and axle position, improving both comfort and propulsion efficiency.
Transport Chairs
Transport chairs are designed to be pushed by a caregiver or companion, not self-propelled. They feature smaller wheels (8 to 12 inches), a lighter frame, and a more compact fold than standard wheelchairs. Weighing as little as 15 to 20 pounds, they are easy to lift into a car trunk. Transport chairs are excellent for medical appointments, airport travel, and outings where someone will always be available to push.
Power Wheelchairs
Power wheelchairs use battery-powered motors and a joystick controller to provide independent mobility without physical effort. They are essential for people who lack the upper body strength to propel a manual chair or who need full-time wheelchair mobility. Modern power chairs offer customizable seating, programmable drive controls, tilt and recline functions, and ranges of 10 to 25 miles per charge.
Power chairs come in several categories: compact indoor models with tight turning radii, mid-wheel drive chairs that balance indoor and outdoor performance, and rear-wheel drive models optimized for outdoor speed and stability. Your primary environment should guide your choice: indoor-focused users benefit from mid-wheel or front-wheel drive, while outdoor users often prefer rear-wheel drive.
Bariatric Wheelchairs
Bariatric wheelchairs are built with reinforced frames, wider seats (22 to 30 inches), and higher weight capacities (400 to 700 pounds) to safely accommodate larger users. Both manual and power bariatric options are available. Key considerations include seat width, frame durability, cushion support, and doorway clearance. Many standard home doorways (32 inches) will not accommodate a wide bariatric chair, so measure your home before purchasing.
Wheelchair Accessories
The right accessories can dramatically improve comfort and usability. Seat cushions reduce pressure and prevent skin breakdown during extended sitting. Wheelchair bags and pouches add carrying capacity without interfering with the wheels. Anti-tip devices prevent backward tipping on slopes. Cup holders, phone mounts, and tray tables add convenience for daily activities. We review the most popular accessories alongside the chairs they complement.
Getting the Right Fit
Proper wheelchair fit is critical for comfort, skin health, and mobility efficiency. Key measurements include seat width (hips plus one inch on each side), seat depth (back of the knee to the backrest, minus two inches), seat height (for proper foot positioning), and backrest height (based on support needs and activity level). A wheelchair seating specialist or physical therapist can help ensure the best fit, especially for full-time users.
Many wheelchairs are available through Medicare Part B as durable medical equipment when prescribed by a physician. Manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, and seat cushions may all be covered, though the specific models and features approved can vary. Our Funding and Insurance guide explains the full process, from prescription to delivery.
