Wheelchair Ramp Calculator

Calculate ADA-compliant ramp length, configuration, and estimated cost based on your measurements.

Recommended Configuration

Switchback (U-shape) recommended — a switchback (U-shape) folds the ramp back on itself, cutting the linear space roughly in half. You will need intermediate landings at each turn.

Estimated Cost (Aluminum Modular Ramp)

$11,900 – $29,750

Based on $100–$250 per square foot for professional aluminum modular ramp installation. Wood ramps typically cost 30–50% less. Concrete ramps vary widely by region.

Funding Note

Medicare does not cover ramp construction. However, Medicaid Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) waivers in many states do cover home modifications including ramps. VA grants (HISA up to $6,800 for service-connected disabilities) and nonprofits like Rebuilding Together provide free or low-cost ramp installation for qualifying individuals. Check our VA benefits guide and free equipment programs for more funding options.

How This Calculator Works

This calculator uses the ADA 1:12 slope standard: for every 1 inch of vertical rise, the ramp extends 12 inches horizontally. It automatically adds 5-foot top and bottom landings and determines whether intermediate landings are needed (required by ADA for every 30 inches of rise). The configuration recommendation is based on total ramp footprint.

Important Notes

  • The ADA applies to public and commercial spaces. For private homes, the 1:12 standard is a recommended best practice, not a legal requirement (though many local building codes adopt it).
  • Cost estimates are for aluminum modular ramp systems with professional installation. Wood and concrete ramps have different cost ranges.
  • Always check local building codes for permit requirements before starting construction.
  • Ramp width is measured between handrails. The overall ramp structure will be wider than the selected width.
